HOW-TO Transfer an AOL Address Book
to Outlook Express
You have three options. If you have to notify everyone of your new email
address (or some other generic piece of info), go
with Option A. Otherwise, you may have to do a bit more work with Option
B or C.
Option A:
- Log on to AOL and send a message to everyone in your address book with
your new contact info. Copy yourself (your new email address) on this
message. Log off.
- Log on to your new ISP. Launch Outlook Express, open the message you
sent to yourself, select the Tools menu from inside that message, then
click "Add to Address Book" > "Everyone on To List."
Outlook Express will ask you to OK each new address book entry one by
one. (Just make sure that none of these names are already in your Outlook
Express address book, or the program will stop in the middle of the
process.)

Option B:
Create a new Email message in AOL
Open your address book and select all addresses then click Send TO.
This will put all the addresses in the TO: field
Open up Notepad or Wordpad, then copy and paste the addresses from the
TO field to Notepad/Wordpad. (Don't use Microsoft Word if you don't have
to. It may start formatting the information in ways you don't want it
to.)
Outlook Express allows importing of addresses in a CSV (Comma Separated
Values) format.
After you paste the addresses in Notepad or Wordpad, the info will look
like this: address xxx, address yyy, address zzz, etc...
In Notepad or Wordpad the addresses will have to be made to look like
the following. {Remember, this is comma separated values so there must
be a comma between items like Email Address, First name, Last name. After
Last name there is a new line (Enter key).
The way to edit would be to add the first name, and last name, AFTER
each address, like this:
address, first name, last name
Important, after entering each last name, press the Enter key so you have
a list like this:
address1, first name1, last name1
address2, first name2, last name2
address3, first name3, last name3
address4, first name4, last name4
etc...
Now you must save this file as filename.csv
CSV is just a text file, but must have the extension .csv to be recognized
by Outlook Express.
To import a .csv file into Outlook Express, open OE.
Click on Tools/Address book/File/Import/other address book
Then click on "Text File (Comma Separated Values)" click Import.
Now browse for your .csv file and select it and click Open. click Next.
Now click on the box with the person's email address, click the down
arrow and select "Email Address", then click OK.
Next, click on the box of the person's first name then arrow down to
"First Name" then click Ok.
Now click on the persons last name then arrow down to "Last Name"
and click ok
Now click Finish.
This should import all the addresses.

Option C:
Just retype all the addresses. The advantage of Option B over retyping
them is that you'll avoid typos.
